Joan Wheeler’s sewn and needle-felted fiber art explores the lives of women. She has portrayed famous women whose achievements or events in their lives have altered the lives of generations of women to come. She has also represented everyday women who express themselves in ways that challenge stereotypes of aging, appearance and gender expression. She is currently working on a series exploring gender expectations of labor in the home. She has collected massive amounts of vintage fabrics and is very interested in issues of sustainability. She is a past recipient of the State of Connecticut Artist Fellowship Grant and has exhibited her work in numerous galleries and museums. She lives and works in Ct.
