James Akers American, b. 1993

Inspired by travel and my metaphor of the artist as a tumbleweed I have been making these improvisational scribbles of glass tubing since learning to bend neon in 2013.

As I travel around the country and my bending skills improve their shapes and bending sequences continuously change. Since moving to New York to learn more about the business side of art and then being thrust into a pandemic economic reality, I have reevaluated my relationship with craft as I increasingly use the things made with my hands to pay my bills.

Created as a craft object designed to sell, the altered pricing and attention to them has added rocket fuel to their growth and development. Additionally the wide selection of Italian glass colors available and fill gases available in New York is pushing them to new heights.
