Lisa Whittington is best known for her painting of Emmett Till,“How She Sent Him and How She Got Him Back”  which contrasts Dana Schutz’s controversial painting “Open Casket”.  She mixes and manipulates various mediums including acrylic, oil, collage and photography to narrate the story she is trying to tell. Lisa is a visual performance artist and the canvas is her stage where she explores African American stories, social justice, abstraction, and her memories of Harlem. Lisa Whittington’s major influences are Van Gogh, Basquiat, Keith Haring, Picasso, Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence. Lisa is also a playwright and a graphic designer.
