The Prayers of Jason Michael Hackenwerth: On View at Bergdorf Goodman!

8/6/2024

We are excited to announce that 7 paintings from Jason Hackenwerth’s series, The Prayers (2023) are showing in the windows of Bergdorf Goodman in New York City, on 5th Ave and 58th St., from August 7th–26th, 2024. The Prayers is a powerful exploration of consciousness, where each painting serves both as a personal journey and a universal statement.

Through recurring shapes, a palette dominated by pinks, reds, and blacks, and the contrast between solid and fluid forms, Hackenwerth creates large-scale abstract oil paintings that engage with the very essence of human existence. The use of text, footprints, and metallic elements adds layers of meaning, urging the viewer to contemplate the deeper questions of purpose and the human experience. The religious titles juxtaposed with abstract forms challenge the observer to decipher the hidden messages within the paintings. They further encourage a profound connection with the artist’s exploration of prayer and humanity.

Hackenwerth’s works require a moment of pause, inviting the viewer to unravel the layers of paint and discover what lies beneath—what is partially obscured yet deeply significant. The intimacy of his paintings, combined with the physicality of his creative process, brings forth abstract forms that encapsulate the essence of prayer and the shared human condition. For Hackenwerth, the act of painting is a path towards accessing the ultimate truth: the recognition of self and the collective “we.”

“The continual practice of transformation and transcendence is a constant in my work. It’s important to me that the paintings are both an expression of the elevation of consciousness as well as a means of experiencing this within the process.” -Jason Hackenwerth
