Amanda Kate Walker. Snow, 2022. Acrylic on Raw canvas. 22.99 x 21.50 in.

Amanda Kate Walker is an inspired artist who uses  every day life as her backdrop for her paintings. Growing up in Texas, her love for history and medieval art came from working at a theater for 30 years.

All these inspirations play a huge part in her art work whether it's experimenting with different shades of blue that reflect in the horizon or replicating the natural settings coming from her backyard.

"There is magic in nature, that touches us all if we let it. In my work, I like to imagine what that magic would look like if it could be made visible.  If I could squint hard enough, what would I see?  Would it be free floating electricity or perhaps a system of rivers that connect us to every living thing?   One way to visualize these questions is mythology. Myths are operatic in scope, but also extremely intimate in the personal ways we understand them and apply them to our lives.  Using my home in Bethany, CT as a setting, great floods wash the world clean, Ursa Major roams the hills, giant crows argue overhead, and ponies fly."

What is impacting your practice at the moment?

Definitely the political environment.  The deep disappointment I feel in my fellow Americans, at their cruelty and greed.  It breaks my heart.  Making art is the best way to process that.  History is another refuge, and currently I am looking to history to understand the present moment.

What work are you most excited to make next?

Collaging with canvas.  I am in love with the process.  If I have a pencil in my hand, I will be way too precious. With the canvas collage, I just cut out the shape.  I started with cutting up old paintings that didn't work out, but then I ran out of those, and now I cut and paint as I go along.

What first comes to mind when you think of the month of August? Do you have a personal connection with it?

I am from Texas, so August is HEAT, cicadas, lazy days.  It is also a sad time.  More than any other time of year, time feels like it is sliding away.

Your work often features backgrounds, entities, and silhouettes in a deep navy blue. What does this color mean to you and what does it represent in your art?

The deep navy is the night sky. It is the subconscious, unlimited and unknowable depth.  It is in each of us, it is the animals, it is water.  I want to dip my hands in it and pull out ideas.
