A Trove

November 14 - December 30, 2024

Focusing on line and color, Jason Michael Hackenwerth usually allows both to run free in his large scale paintings, but for Trove, an exclusive online exhibition, Hackenwerth highlights his ability to stay true to his practice regardless of the size. Binding himself to smaller scaled works, Hackenwerth maintains his focus on confident lines while also directing our attention to what may seem to be a bunch of random titles. The truth of the matter though, is these titles imply a view on some of the finer aspects of daily life. Take for example Bishop and Rook, and place it against An Awakening - placed thusly one can think that the artist suggests that through strategy and careful thought can one travel through metaphorical alleys, paths and over walls to find their own place, their own comfort in a world fraught with distractions and obstacles. But, there is also the dependable humor in Hackenwerth's works to consider. Baker's Dozen set next to The Mirage playfully nudges one to reconsider notions of perfection - the forever sought bakers dozen, the glee of getting one more, for free while being paired next to an entity of imagination, richly fabled - remind us to keep humor and optimism close by as again we seek to find that place, within, that brings peace. It all comes down to Hackenwerth's understanding of life, and his medium as an artist that allows this myriad of meditations that result in a unique and often refreshing world view.
