The CAMP Gallery is pleased to annouce our January exhibition is to be featuring multi-disciplnary artist Maru Ulivi, with guest curation by Karina Madonni. The exhibition opens January 18th, with a special opening event from 6:30 - 9:00 pm. at the gallery in North Miami.Below is the statement from the curator herself, in English and then following in Spanish for your reading. Que'date Conmigo is a title and it is a plea.Or a plain request. Or an imperative.It also gives its name to all the pieces that make up this debut work by the multifaceted artist Maru Ulivi.An inevitable question arises: to whom are these two words addressed? Each of us could appropriate them out of a desire for someone to stay by our side.Stay. Request for closeness. Proximity of the bodies.The curious thing is that this request, order or plea, operates in a different way when it is pronounced by Maru. The artist implores herself to 'stay with me', provoking a withdrawal into her own interiority. Splitting herself in order to remain in an inside that is her own. So the question requires a change: to what are these words addressing? To her own essence, to her soul. The request is that her inner self stays with her. To protect oneself from external and foreign mandates that provoke deviations and pulverization of one's own essential truth. To no longer abandon oneself to externalities that take us away from ourselves. To empower our own strength. To be unfaithful to our own voice. Artistic practice in its multiple forms has allowed Maru to re-conquer herself, to recover old family knowledge, to value it for her own work, to strengthen herself by remembering her grandmother crocheting, and to encourage her to play. It has also allowed her to let go of family mandates that delineate some personal maps. Textiles as a bridge to recapture her own voice. Performance as a ritual to get rid of old burdens. And photography as a tactile approach to curved rhythms, to voids and silences. Reconciling the diverse ways of doing in her own visual constellation.The textile component is present in all her works, both in the woven ones and in the photographs. It is her way of seeing and being in the world, of touching it.It's a touching sight. The textile works in this exhibition are mostly crocheted and macrame; the artist also incorporates basketry and basket weaving techniques with repurposed materials. Embroidery is timidly present on some external surfaces. It is in the folding and retracting of the woven planes, where a dialogue between the interior and exterior of the pieces is propitiated. Nature, embodied in small elements - sea shells, branches, stones and roots - are also artistic matter that are incorporated as fragments of the world within the softness of the lattices. It is in the assemblages where multiple techniques, elements and diverse materialities are combined, in vibrant and luminous chromatics, delicately mixed. The photographs selected for this exhibition maintain a deep link with the textile pieces from the tactile attributes of the images presented, which become abstract and organic, where spatial references are lost and we can immerse ourselves in micro universes full of secrets.Finally, the video performance expands the scope of the concept of the exhibition, unfolding an action between daily and ritual where the artist destroys with fire a piece of her own authorship loaded with secrets and mandates, thus proposing, from her native Caracas, a performative action in solitude, resilient both to her personal history and to her own work.This exhibition proposes a journey without masks, a journey through the imaginary bridges that the artist builds between each of her pieces and the viewer. Surrendering ourselves to the curved rhythms of her images, to a touching look, is a way of choreographing this map of voids and silences, with its interiorities on the surface.To stay with and in ourselves as a starting point to continue this journey together with everyone else. Qu'date Conmigo es un t'tulo y es una s'plica.
O una llana solicitud.
O un imperativo.
Tambien, da nombre a todas las piezas que componen esta pera prima de la multifactica artista Maru Ulivi.
Surge un interrogante inevitable: a quin van dirigidas estas dos palabras? Cada uno de nosotros nos las podr'amos apropiar movidos por el deseo de que alguien permanezca a nuestro lado.
Qu'date. Pedido de cercan'a. Proxemia de los cuerpos.
Lo curioso es que este pedido, orden o ruego, opera de modo diferente cuando es pronunciado por Maru. La artista se implora a s' misma 'qu'date conmigo', provocando un repliegue hacia su propia interioridad. Escindirse para permanecer en un adentro que le es propio.Entonces la pregunta requiere un cambio: 'a quen se dirigen estas palabras?
A su propia esencia, a su alma. El pedido es que su adentro se quede con ella. Protegerse de mandatos externos y ajenos que provocan desv'os y pulverizaciones de una verdad propia y esencial. Ya no abandonarse a exterioridades que nos aleja de nosotros mismos. Potenciar la fuerza propia. Ser infieles a nuestra voz.
La pr'ctica art'stica en sus m'ltiples formas, le ha permitido a Maru re-conquistarse, recuperar viejos saberes familiares, ponerlos en valor para su propio quehacer, fortalecerse recordando a su abuela tejiendo al crochet, y animarse a jugar. Tambi'n le ha permitido soltar mandatos familiares que delinean algunos mapas personales. Lo textil como puente para recapturar su propia voz. La performance como ritual para deshacerse de viejas cargas. Y la fotograf'a como un acercamiento t'ctil a los ritmos curvos, a los vac'os y silencios. Reconciliar las diversas formas de hacer en su propia constelaci'n visual. El componente textil se encuentra presente en todas sus obras, tanto en las tejidas como en las fotograf'as. Es su modo de ver y de estar en el mundo, de palparlo.
Es un ver tocando.
Las obras textiles presentes en esta exhibici'n han sido realizadas mayormente en tejido al crochet y macram'; la artista tambi'n incorpora t'cnicas de cester'a y embarrilado con materiales de reutilizaci'n. El bordado se hace presente t'midamente sobre algunas superficies externas. Es en el pliegue y repliegue de los planos tejidos, donde se propicia un di'logo entre las interioridades y exterioridades de las piezas.
La naturaleza, encarnada en peque'os elementos - caracoles marinos, ramas, piedras y ra'ces -, tambi'n son materia art'stica que se incorporados en tanto fragmentos del mundo entre la blandura de los entramados.
Es en los assamblages donde se combinan m'ltiples t'cnicas, elementos y materialidades diversas, en cromaticidades vibrantes y luminosas, delicadamente combinadas.Las fotograf'as seleccionadas para esta muestra mantienen un profundo v'nculo con las piezas textiles desde los atributos t'ctiles de las im'genes presentadas, que se nos tornan abstractas y org'nicas, donde las referencias espaciales se pierden y podemos sumergimos en universos micro plagados de secretos.
Por 'ltimo, la video-performance ampl'a los alcances del concepto de la muestra, desplegando una acci'n entre cotidiana y ritual donde la artista destruye con fuego una pieza de su autor'a cargada de secretos y mandatos, proponiendo as', desde su Caracas natal, una acci'n perform'tica en soledad, resiliente tanto para con su historia personal como para con su propia obra.Esta exhibici'n propone un viaje sin m'scaras, un recorrido por los puentes imaginarios que la artista construye entre cada una de sus piezas y quien mira. Entregarnos a los ritmos curvos de sus im'genes, a un mirar tocando, es un modo de coreografiar este mapa de vac'os y silencios, con sus interioridades a flor de piel.
