Inspired by the rich, sensory experience of walking into a greenhouse—the vast collection of plant-life, the heaviness of the sweet floral fragrance mingled with the earthy scent of soil, encompassed by the heat and humidity—my paintings transform a space with brightly saturated colors and contrasting textures.
Paintings from “Hothouse” and “Botanica” series serve as specimens within this ecosystem, inviting closer observation. Their surfaces, marked with dimensional fabric paint, matte chalk paint, and glitter, reveal depth and form composed of layered linework. The adjacent colors are made to be mixed in the viewer’s eye, echoing the textural and colorful components of a plant that make up a whole greater than the sum of its parts.
To develop this layered visual vocabulary, I drew on a diverse history of floral motifs, including the carefully observed details in 18th century botanical drawings, the patterning of Jacobean tapestries, and the flat abstraction of Swedish floral design.
