A Woman’s position in Ancient Greece was merely one step above that of a slave. She had few rights. Girls were not educated but were taught to manage households. They married young, and their role in society was to have children. Women could not own property, they could not vote, or own land. They did not go out in public or interact with men. Even though women were greatly disadvantaged they were smart enough to get what they wanted with what they had. In the play Lysistrata they used their bodies. Luckily, Twenty-First-century women have more rights. Or do they? A woman’s right to choose whether or not to have children is in jeopardy. Maybe today’s women should use the same tactic as our ancient Greek sisters and abstain from sex until We Secure Our Rights.
