Often referred to as the Mother of Feminism, Gloria Steinem has inspired generations of women to become
activists. A prominent leader since the 1960s, she organized countless protests and marches, and cofounded
Ms. Magazine as a platform for feminist voices and ideas. Now at age ninety, she continues to inspire and has
demonstrated the power of persistent, multi-faceted activism.
In Aristophanes’ play, Lysistrata challenges the patriarchal norms of ancient Greek society by proposing and
organizing a sex strike to end the Peloponnesian War. Like Steinem, Lysistrata is a charismatic leader who
confronts male-dominated power, working to harness the collective power of women.
Reproductive rights, workplace equality, social justice: the battles continue. Both Steinem and Lysistrata, in
their respective contexts, exemplify how individual women can inspire and mobilize others to work towards
social change, even in the face of significant opposition.
