Jason Hackenwerth’s current body of work uses popular food product packaging pressed directly into gestural strokes of thick paint. The bright colors and recognizable cereal icons jump right into the subliminally motivating marketing strategies of the food giants the paintings sport and serves them up with a mix of sarcasm and childhood nostalgia.

On the surface these works are playful and loosely figurative, making them easily digestible. Looking closer, they reflect our complex relationship with processed foods, and hint at the challenges of classism, corporatocracy, and mass behavior driven by subversive marketing.
