Directly challenging the historical homogeneity of voices given importance in society, The Contemporary Art Modern Project has, for the last three years, been spotlighting female voices and experiences through textile and fiber artistry in an annual exhibition series titled Women Pulling at The Threads of Social Discourse. We are pleased to be bringing a version of the show to The Museum of Contemporary Art in Westport this year, with an opening planned for June 2022.
Textile work is inextricable from the lived experience of women, and has such been relegated to the realm of the “feminine”. In a world where the feminine perspective is often pushed to the sideline and forced to occupy the space of the observer, returning to fiber artistry allows for the enrichment of our collective reality while disrupting stereotypes. 2019 saw the first run of the exhibition series, titled Eight Women Pulling at The Threads of Social Discourse, which originally applied Marxist literary criticism to textiles to highlight how contemporary notions of class and social structure alienate the individual and perpetuate the modern phenomenon of ‘angst’. In 2020, the exhibition grew to include 40 textile artists, all members of Fiber Artists Miami Association (FAMA) exploring the nuances tied to the centennial of the Women’s vote through flags.
The Contemporary Art Modern Project has been invited to show the 2020 run of this exhibition in MoCA Westport, and is opening up submissions to artists who wish to participate. Works will be juried.
