“The Oracle series is inspired by recent visits to Pompeii, Rome, and Florence; this new collection of fiber art sculptures embody prophetic voices and protective talismans as structures of support for community-engaged rebuilding.”

The mythical quality that permeates through Sylvan’s work comes to a head in his Oracle series, where intricately embroidered busts form counsel. They engage the viewer in a serene conversation about community and pride through the movement Sylvan creates through a signature patchwork of brightly colored interwoven textiles, beads, and sequins. -

Oracle with Beard of Keys is faintly reminiscent of both a Roman bust and the artist themself, brightly adorned with symbols of protection and freedom.
Together with the loose threads entangled with the keys within the oracles’ beard, they invite viewers to unravel the parts of ourselves that might be kept locked away.
In a world where a safe environment wherein one can express themselves to the fullest is not a guarantee—especially true of queer people—Michael Sylvan Robinson creates them.

Sylvan retains recognizable features of the human face while building from a colorful array of patterns and texture, not one bead used in the same fashion. The end result is an array of fantastical forms that feel greater than the sum of their parts, each sculpture conjuring a distinct feeling of assurance, unabashed and unafraid to revel in their oneness. Their otherworldliness unbinds them from the binary of human social construct, but their materiality links us to them, guiding viewers to look inwards to reflect on what makes them unique, and the good that sharing in that uniqueness does.
