Staged in the Abundant: An online solo exhibition featuring the new photography of Melissa Webb

2 February - 5 April 2024
Webb's "Vintage Doily Reanimations" series focuses on not only the models in her works but also the environment she has placed them in. Using a pictorial language, she orchestrates scenarios where we encounter the subjects in fields of doilies, colors and different textures. What we, the viewers are faced with is an explosion of color and texture - and our imagination.

It seems as though each image can be likened to a chapter of exploration, creation, memory and ultimately identity, not just of the subject - but both the artist and the viewer. For example, each photograph embodies both the model and the environment but also the positioning of the model in the environment. In many of these works, the model is found in something very reminiscent to a field, where we may wonder, before finding herself reposing in this field, what was the model doing? Was she running, twirling, picnicking, laughing, - what was she doing? This defining is initially done by the artist, but then is released to the viewer - where the coupling of memory, Identity and experience become the guide through Webb's vignettes. It becomes quite clear that the viewer is integral to the piece as we have to imagine. Works like Webb's that invite and rely on the viewer are works often seen, to be truthful - but often there is some guidance, or even a reliance on current events to guide - but in Webb's works here - the reliance is on the imagination and experience of the viewer - and frankly, that is quite refreshing.
