Red, White, and Pink: The Colors of Politics is a commentary on the slow evolution of suffrage in the United States, especially as far as black women are concerned. In this piece, I grapple with the many layers of double standards that black and brown women have to face in politics—from the color of our skin, to the politicization of our natural hair, to whether we are too black, or not black enough. In different situations, we have to think about making our voices heard...but not too loud. We also have to worry about dealing with our anger about injustice without coming across as aggressive. The title of this piece alludes to the fact that one hundred years after women have gotten the right to vote, although black women are present in politics, we are not sufficiently represented. The colors also allude to the violent history of our country, the majority culture, and stereotypical feminine characteristics. As critical as this piece is, it is also a hopeful symbol of the change that may be on the horizon with the impending election.
