This flag celebrates the achievements of women from 100 years ago, while guarding our hard-earned liberties for future generations. All our journeys connected, past, present, and future.
Its’ threads were free-formed, organically woven one by one, the same way we weave our relationships with other women, friends, and acquaintances. The piece is see-through, as transparent should be those relationships, and purposely shaped like a flag moving with the wind. These interconnections represent the idea that we can only move forward if we stick together, in society as in fabric, threads are intertwined.
Past, present and future are represented by the color threads of yarn hand dyed mainly by women. The past is shown by softer colors, threads faded by time, mixed with the brighter colored ones of the present. The future is represented by neon colors, expressing hope for a brighter tomorrow.
There are 36 stars abstractly woven into this flag to represent the 36 states needed to ratify the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution in 1920.
